What does the Motor Third Party Liability insurance contract cover?
The Motor Third Party Liability insurance contract covers the criminal civil liability of the holder or of the user of a vehicle for damages generated to a third party by the vehicle. Covered risks:
- personal injury or death, including damages generated to assets;
- material damages;
- damages resulted from the impossibility to use the damaged vehicle;
- legal costs incurred by the person subject to damage.
Such risks are covered irrespective of the place where the car accident took place (public roads, roads that are not open to public circulation, in premises and other places), during travel, as well as during the parked state of the insured vehicle.
What are the territorial limits of the Motor Third Party Liability insurance contract?
Starting with January 1st, 2007, the date of Romania's accession to the European Union, the territorial limits for the coverage of the vehicle liability insurance contract are:
- Romanian territory;
- territory of European Union member states and of states belonging to the European Economic Area (Austria, Belgium, Bulgaria, Cyprus, Czech Republic, Germany, Denmark, Spain, Estonia, France, Finland, Great Britain, Greece, Hungary, Italy, Ireland, Iceland, Luxembourg, Lithuania, Latvia, Malta, Norway, Netherlands, Portugal, Poland, Sweden, Slovakia, Slovenia, Switzerland);
- the territory of states establishing a direct connection between two member states of the European Union where there is no national office (Monaco, Vatican, Republic of San Marino, Lichtenstein).
What are the compensation limits of the Motor Third Party Liability insurance contract?
The territorial limits for the Motor Third Party Liability insurance contract include, within the meaning of the same insurance premium, the coverage of damages in accordance with the legislation in force in the state on the territory of which the car accident took place, at the higher compensation limit between the legislation of the respective state and the limits stipulated in the Motor Third Party Liability insurance contract.

According to the status of the vehicle registration, the vehicle liability insurance contract is concluded for a definite term, as such:
- 12 months or 6 months, for registered vehicles;
- during the validity of the temporary circulation permit, for vehicles that are registered temporarily, however no more than 60 days;
- during the temporary registration term, however no more than 12 months;
- for no more than 30 days after acquiring the right of possession, for vehicles registered in other member states (member states of the European Economic Area, Switzerland, Croatia and Andorra), requiring an insurance for registration purposes;
- for one-month terms, however no more than 3 months, for vehicles registered in third countries (other than member states), for which insurance is required for registration.
What is the cost of a vehicle liability insurance contract?
Insurers establish annual premium rates for each category of vehicles, so as to constantly guarantee the observance of the duties derived from the conclusion of vehicle liability contracts.
The level of the insurance premiums is established according to the owner type (natural person or legal person), the vehicle type and technical features, the validity period of the insurance, etc.
What are the legal changes on the vehicle liability insurance contract?
Starting with January 1st, 2010, vehicle liability insurance policies are only issued electronically.
